A deal, Tie-up, a Favor or a 'Lock-in'?

The statements that the current Indian government and officials in charge made great efforts in getting the Nuclear waiver is a total BS. They might actually think that they have, but it had to come through anyways. No matter which other country opposed, it had to. US desperately wants to be in a position where it seems to be doing India a favor currently. The fact is that it was a lock-in in disguise.

This might be one of the US favors that my country regrets in the decades to come. All we need to do is look at the countries US has done a favor to in the past and their current fate.

Here I am not trying to echo the words of BJP. They would have done the exact same thing as a ruling party to get the popular vote, with elections close by. I am not a supporter of the Indian left parties. All one has to do is look at is the world after WWII and traces of neocolonialism. Any kid in the elementary school can tell you that deals must be made with equals or someone weaker and never with a bully.

True Naiki, but the fact remains its a dangerously unipolar world, and we do need to play our realpolitik cards well, but i agree with u we need to be concerned abt how the dynamics pan out now...

Harish,

It might seem that the US is doing this because it "desperately wants to be in a position where it seems to be doing India a favor", but there are other intentions as well.
USA, after the Three Mile Island accident stopped building nuclear reactors. They did build LWRs, but they were mainly for defence and other small purposes (not for electricity). They have actually lost out on nuclear experience(building reactors)for 30 years. Now they have started paying attention to nuclear power once again. They need engineers, technicians, people with experience, to start off once again. I think that is what they are looking for in India. They are other issues also, like counterbalancing China etc.

"kals",

1. Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliable_Replacement_Warhead
2. "Counterbalancing China etc.": "desperately wants to be ..." - do they sound as if one must be because of the other? Think.

Hey Harish,
I dont agree with you completely on this.If you go into the details of the Nuclear deal,it would be very advantageous for India in the long term.Especially considering the present Energy scenario.
Pros outweigh the cons for India. No doubt American companies would be bagging deals in billions, but if India does invest in setting up the Nuclear Infrastructure,it can be less dependent on current sources of energy.
Also I completely agree that US has one eye on China when they so vehemontly advocated the deal in NSG.

Wizkid!

Uranium is not a solution for India. Thorium is. We will always be borrowers of Uranium. Instead we should do more research on using Thorium for energy because we have 300,000 tonnes of Thorium reserves.

Harish,

Thorium will only be a solution when they become Uranium 233. That takes time and you need to put them in the reactor to mutate. So initially you need those U 235.

Also the thing I said about the US having not built a reactor for many days; I learnt when I attended a lecture from the late Sir Placid Rodriguez. The link that you gave me talks only about reactors for military use, not for electricity. They are different.

Why are you like this? Why are you arguing besides the point? Why do you fail to see the gist of the article? For one last time I'll answer you. Thorium absorbs a neutron emits an electron and becomes Proactinium which again undergoes beta decay to become U-233. It takes time and needs lot of research. I understand that fact. That does not mean US is doing India a favor. We need to stop acting as though US is our savior. Because all countries that have received so called 'favors' form the US have repented a decade and a half later. Read John Pilger's "The New Rulers of the World". Please stick to the theme of the article when you comment. RRW is not for electricity was precisely my point, and I know enough to understand that the two kinds of reactors are different. BTW, you are very funny. Can you identify yourself please?

Harish,

No one is saying that US is our saviour!Surely, the US is going to make billions from it.But my point is that it is also a "potentially" good deal for India.
Also what this deal shows is "US is taking India seriously now" Otherwise why would they use all their might to pass the deal through stage.I feel China is a more real and potent threat to India than the US.US has given an example that it will support India at a world stage if it comes to that.

1. "The government sincerely thanks the effort of President Bush and Condoleezza Rice (US Secretary of State)." Indian Minister for External Affairs as quoted by CNN-IBN

2. China might be and certainly a threat, but we are not making compromising deals with them either. So right now that is not the concern and scope of the article in question.

3. They are taking us seriously now? Oh don't we fell blessed? How much more could they pretend to ignore?

4. Support India? Like support Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran (the Shah), Indonesia (Suharto). You make me laugh.

5. Read terms of the deal: http://www.cfr.org/publication/9663/#2
